Maximum Pressure: Top 10 Pressing Forwards

In the Premier League, pressing forwards are the unsung heroes, tirelessly closing down opponents and turning defense into attack. They are agents of Maximum Pressure. These players combine relentless energy, tactical intelligence, and exceptional stamina to disrupt play and create opportunities. This season’s top pressing forwards have set a new standard, showcasing the importance of defensive aggression and offensive opportunism in modern football.

Topping our list is Jeremy Doku.  Manchester City’s left winger certainly doesn’t lack speed or effort on the pitch. He’s in direct competition for playing time with Jack Grealish, the club’s record signing, so expect the Belgian to continue pressing on the defensive end. If Doku can remain healthy and continue to be an effective dribbler and presser, Pep Guardiola will absolutely continue to include Doku in his plans.

At #2 is Luis Sinisterra who has been a revelation for Bournemouth. His high pressing score highlights his tenacity and commitment to disrupting the opposition. Sinisterra’s agility and anticipation allow him to intercept passes and challenge defenders effectively, making him a crucial asset in Bournemouth’s pressing game.

Joelinton places third on our list.  His physical presence and tactical intelligence are key to Newcastle United’s pressing strategy. Joelinton combines strength and stamina to press opponents tirelessly. His ability to win aerial duels and recover possession high up the pitch makes him a formidable opponent for any defense.

Everton’s Beto, at #4, has proven to be an industrious forward with a pressing score of 95. His physicality and determination allow him to apply pressure consistently. Beto’s pressing not only disrupts the opposition but also creates opportunities for his teammates to capitalize on defensive mistakes.

#5 is Jordan Ayew.  His experience and work ethic shine through in his pressing game. Ayew’s relentless pursuit of the ball forces defenders into uncomfortable situations. His ability to press intelligently and win back possession has been instrumental for Crystal Palace.

Sixth place finds Joao Pedro. It’s a shame that Roberto De Zerbi’s tenure has come to an end at Brighton. De Zerbi-Ball was a pleasure to watch, with Joao Pedro leading from the front and spearheading the press. It’ll be interesting to see how Brighton approaches this season, but surely, Joao Pedro is in the plans.

Gabriel Jesus comes in at seventh on our list.  Mikel Arteta knows better than anyone that effective pressing often separates the legit title challengers from the rest of the league. He’ll continue to count on Gabriel Jesus, a player he specifically recruited from City after serving as an assistant coach there, to lead the line and force opposition back lines to make mistakes.

At #8 is Taiwo Awoniyi. Nottingham Forrest’s #9 played a vital role in the club’s successful escape from relegation last season. The 2023/24 season was Forrest’s second consecutive season in the top flight, so the club was more confident and willing to come out of their defensive shell. Taiwo’s inclusion on this list demonstrates his eagerness to press and lead from the front – perhaps forwards on other relegation-threatened clubs can take inspiration from him.

Raheem Sterling occupies the ninth spot. His time at Chelsea has featured too many different managers and not enough wins. Despite the revolving door of tactics, Sterling knows that top teams, and top players, press and hustle on the defensive end. Chelsea’s players would do well to learn from this league veteran.

Rounding out our list in the tenth spot is Timo Werner. Tottenham’s newfound identity under Ange Postecoglou revolves around pressing high up the pitch. Timo Werner’s pace, stamina, and willingness to run allow him to contribute defensively and be an asset to Spurs, even when his goalscoring abilities fall short.
